Power Flush Cost Guide 2026 (UK)

The Norwich Plumbing Services Team6 min read

How much does a power flush actually cost, when do you need one, and what does it involve? A clear, updated guide with real UK price ranges.

A power flush typically costs £300–£600 for an average UK home, depending on how many radiators you have and how much sludge has built up in the system. It’s one of the most misunderstood jobs in domestic heating — so here’s what it actually involves and when you genuinely need one.

What a power flush actually does

Over years of use, central heating systems build up a mix of rust, limescale, and black sludge (magnetite) inside the pipework and radiators. This restricts water flow, makes your boiler work harder than it needs to, and causes cold spots on radiators even when the heating is on full.

A power flush uses a pump to push water — sometimes combined with a cleaning chemical — through the system at high velocity in both directions, breaking up and flushing out this debris before it causes real damage.

Power flush cost breakdown

System size Typical cost
Small (up to 6 radiators) £300–£450
Medium (7–9 radiators) £400–£600
Large (10+ radiators, heavily sludged) £550–£750+

The price depends on the number of radiators, how accessible they are, and how much sludge has built up — a system that’s never been flushed will usually take longer and cost more than one with routine maintenance.

Signs you need a power flush

  • Radiators that are cold at the bottom but hot at the top (or vice versa)
  • Banging, gurgling, or kettling noises from the boiler
  • Needing to bleed radiators frequently
  • Discoloured (black or brown) water when you bleed a radiator
  • Fitting a new boiler onto an older, unflushed system — manufacturers often require this to protect the warranty

Power flush vs. a new boiler

If your boiler is old and struggling, it’s worth reading our guide on the signs your boiler needs replacing first — sometimes a power flush revives an ageing system, and sometimes the boiler itself is simply at the end of its life. We’ll give you an honest view either way, not just an upsell.

How long it takes and what’s involved

Most jobs are done in a single visit, typically 4–8 hours: isolating the system, connecting the flushing pump, running the flush with a cleaning chemical, then thoroughly rinsing and refilling with an inhibitor to protect against future sludge build-up. You’ll get a full boiler service check at the same time if needed.

Getting a fixed price

We inspect your system before quoting, so the price we give you is the price you pay — no surprise add-ons part way through. If your radiators are cold at the bottom, or you’re just not sure whether you need one, get in touch and we’ll take a look.
